Ischia : history

ISCHIA PORT

Ischia port is the largest and most important town of the island. When you enter the port, your attention is drawn to a magnificent castle built on a tiny island, the Aragonese Castle, which is joined to Ischia by a narrow bridge. This is the symbol of the island.

In the Middle Ages, when pirates roamed the seas, the inhabitants often took refuge in this secure place. The Aragonese Castle is mostly remembered for the wedding of the famous poetess Vittoria Colonna to Francesco Ferrante d’Avalos.

Ischia port is famous as an exclusive holiday resort thanks to its hotels of all categories and its sandy beaches which merge into the green pine woods. One of the most important features of Ischia port and the island as a whole, are the numerous thermal springs.

The port, one of the most beautiful in the world, was originally a volcanic crater which was turned into a port in 1854 by the Bourbons. Here is the main point of arrival of ferries, hydrofoils and private yachts as well as smaller boats and the thousands of tourists who come from nearby Naples. Here we find the largest streets and hotels and the picturesque “ Riva Destra ” with its restaurants and wine bars. Nearby, there is Via Roma and Corso Vittoria Colonna with its boutiques and street cafés.

Note also the areas of Cartaromana, Campagnano, San Michele, San Ciro, Sant’Antuono, Sant'Alessandro.

All these places offer a wide range of accommodation to suit all tastes and pockets.
